Residents' bid to slash 'boozy' club's hours

A SNOOKER club which serves booze later than any venue in High Wycombe is facing a council showdown with residents over noisy customers.

Flat owners are using recent changes to licensing laws to try and slash the opening hours of the Hurricane Room, formerly Fast Eddie's in Corporation Street.

In 2005 the club got permission to open to 3am Sunday to Wednesday and 6am Thursday to Saturday.

But the plush Bankside development was built later - and residents now say drunken revellers are making their lives a misery.

Residents' spokesman Mike Kirkwood, 42, said people "lose six to 10 hours of quality time from their weekends".

They hope to cut the hours to 12am Sunday to Thursday and 2am Friday and Saturday under a little-used section of the 2003 Licensing Act.

This lets residents call a review - and has only been used four times in Wycombe.

The controversial act allowed pubs and shops to serve booze for longer and led to the snooker club extending its hours in 2005.

It now serves alcohol longer than any other club or pub in the town.

Mr Kirkwood, an engineer, said: "Some residents have to get up for work at 6am on weekdays and so only manage three to four hours sleep some nights and are therefore suffering sleep deprivation."

He said: "These have been fights, arguments, people shouting and swearing, illegal parking, loud music from cars, car doors slamming, urinating, spitting and littering."

Transcripts handed to councillors of recordings made by Mr Kirkwood include "shouting girls then swearing at doorman" and "loud voices getting more agitated".

One entry records "loud voices, words audible walk away walk away' followed by shouting oi, oi you'd better stay there' shut the f**k up'".

A report from Wycombe District Council's environmental services division - which arranged the recording and urged a review - said: "Specific evidence does suggest that the noise is linked to the Hurricane Room."

Pubs in the area shut at 2am and this is when the trouble starts, Mr Kirkwood claims, as revellers head to the snooker club to continue drinking.

A 2am close would resolve this, residents of the £250,000 flats believe.

Mr Kirkwood, a resident with his wife since last May, said: "This will also aid policing as the other public houses in and around the High Street also close at this time and therefore a police presence is already in the area."

By 5am police resources are "stretched as they have other commitments within other sections of the town" he claims.

The panel, which meets at 10.30am at the council's Queen Victoria Road offices, has powers which include changing the opening hours, removing a licensed activity and revoking the licence.

Hurricane Room owner Gavin Tressider declined to comment.

the flats were built after the rules were changed, its just like people moving in next to a train line and saying they should stop the trains sooner because they keep you awake (and they do, i live next to the line)

yes but to be open til 6am! its crazy and unnecessary these drinkers need to control themselves. im surprised the hours are allowed to be like that its totally wrong

Clearly not for the people using the snooker centre, using the same logic you could argue that people that roll up to Morrisons 5 minutes before it closes are "wrong", but hey, its a free country...

The snooker centre was there long before the flats, did the buyers not look out of the windows and see it?

I think ajb100 is quite right - you don't move in to a flat above a nightclub then ask them to turn the music down - When you buy a house you should consider all aspects and although the people leaving the club SEEM to be acting in a bad way, is it really as bad as they are making out ? SBJones - Asda is open 24 hours a day - Should all them shoppers control themselves ??

Maybe the "plush" development should have incorporated better soundproofing, double glazing etc...

To be honest if you don't want the noise of the town, don't live in the center of town.

if the council let the builders build theses places in towns, where pubs and clubs are . what do you expect. do theses people look before they buy. if you want peace and no noise, dont buy in the town centre.

First off it isn't snooker it is a POOL club!

It is a wonderful place to spend an evening and I personnally haven't seen any trouble.
Although me and my friends leave about 23:00 most nights.
Sometimes when we leave on a sunday the place is hardly busy.

Also I thought that the flats hadn't finished being built.
It's probably people who have been kicked out of the clubs in other parts of the town looking to cause trouble, or the music is coming from the Dominos' delivery drivers, as the music in the Pool Club is not that loud.

I't also isn't "boozy" as written in the headline.

Maybe you should get all of the facts before writing a story, maybe actually spend some time at the club.

wingy people: You seem to have a problem with your Caps Lock key being stuck. Also your spell check isn't doing it's job.

I agree with those who point out that the people who moved into the flats did so after the pool club extended it's hours. I hope they don't succeed in their protest because of that. If you don't want noise late at night, don't move next door to a late-opening club in the town centre. It's incredibly selfish for them to move in then expect businesses around them to change their opening hours to their satisfaction. If they want less noise they should have got somewhere out of town.

After reading wingy people's comment, I'd bulldoze the hurricane room. With him in it.
