Police wear crime cameras
|
| PC Tom Day with the new camera kit |
POLICE officers have started to wear cameras fitted to their jackets to provide filmed evidence of alleged crimes.
Four of the cameras have been handed to Wycombe and Marlow police stations.
They are connected to a computer disk which clips onto the officers' belts and can record up to two hours of video and sound.
PC Russ Murden, neighbourhood inspector for High Wycombe, said the cameras would be sent to jobs and used routinely on Tuesday and Friday nights.
Fights and similar public order offences were the types of crimes officers expected to capture on film, he said.
"It is a little bit like Robocop come home. It is very simple technology, very light and easy to use."
He added: "When people see cameras in the area it can diffuse situations when they realise whatever is being said or done is all being captured and could potentially be used in a future prosecution."
Camera evidence had already led to a suspect being remanded in custody when brought before a court, he said.
This might not have happened without video evidence, he said.
Responding to concerns about today's surveillance society' he said officers would wear armbands, indicating they are using cameras and the devices would be used openly.

Hopefully this will serve both ways and making the police accountable in some aspects i.e. support evidence of police brutality/over use of force but methinks that will be turned off then.

Great idea. Just think of the awful story in the news today of 2 Police Officers being attacked by a 'mob' in Croyden allegedly just because they asked a teenage girl to pick up her litter. People need to start being scared of the Police again. If its not guns then maybe cameras will help.

TBH this shocks me more than the recent stabbings of the youth and highlights the dangers the police face every day of their working lives.
Every officer should be given one of these cameras, it won't prevent attacks but may go some way to identifying those involved.

When the offenders realise that they’ve been caught on camera surely the offenders will attack the policeman to try to get the device which stores the images?
Perhaps the ordinary people should be issued with them too so they can record the actions of the police when they arrest them?

Would be much more effective & afford better protection when a camera can stream live images to colleagues, as well as record.
Surely that is possible already?
They need all the help they can get.

Should the police be giving warnings before recording the information, like they do in recorded interviews or on the brink of arrest?
Whilst I can see this tool might be useful to the police, I foresee legal problems with using it as evidence in a court.

Very interesting!!! I was stopped by a a marked police car, a unmarked police car, and a police transit van! All because this officer took offence to me 'gestering' to her! She says I was speeding up Marlow Hill, and that she asked me to stop my car! At no point did she do this! She followed all round the Cressex Industrial Estate, and I was finally stopped at John Hall Way, by this bunch of Muppets!!! The first thing she said was, you shouldn't have given me the 'finger' then!!! I would like have given her a lot more than that!!! Where were the bloody cameras then!!! I have written to Professional Standards and mentioned the camera situation!!! What a surprise they are now wearing cameras!!! My best piece of advice for any future 'victim' out there is: Always check your rear view mirror!!! And, always carry a camera!!! And, voice recorder!!! She was investigated!!! But, surprise, surprise, they stuck up for their own kind!!! Best of British!!!
quote
[bold]bold[/bold]
