Nearly 200 dodge TV licence payments
ALMOST 200 people have been caught watching TV without a licence in High Wycombe in the last six months.
It means the number of licence dodgers in Wycombe is the third highest in the county.
Figures released by TV Licensing today showed 175 evaders were caught in High Wycombe in the first six months of the year, with only Aylesbury and Milton Keynes having more residents caught dodging payments.
The statistics showed 1,147 people in Milton Keynes avoided paying - making the town the worst for non-payments in the whole of the south east.
Nationally, nearly a quarter of a million people have been caught watching TV without a licence since the start of the year.
Joanna Pearce, TV Licensing spokesman, said: "TV Licensing's powerful database shows precisely which properties are unlicensed, meaning enquiry officers can target addresses where they suspect people are watching TV illegally.
"But we would much rather people buy a licence rather than risk prosecution and a fine."

However their "powerful database" is unable to realise, despite being told several times, that my property is now a set of flats all of which have TV licences but they repeatedly send nasty letters to the old house address. Muppets.

A lot of people have Sky - and pay Sky to view television via satellite - why should we have to pay a TV license as well?
I think it's time the TV license was abolished.

even if you don't have a TV you need a licence these days as it covers computers, laptops, and mobile phones that can view TV via the web...it's a bleedin' cheek!

i hate paying it but i really hate licence dodgers more, high wycombe is full of people who dont do anything but sit on their arses all day watching the tv and claiming benefit even if they go to court they wont pay the fine

You do not even need a TV license to watch BBC iplayer.
You only need a TV license if you are watching TV via a computer if the programme is being aired on TV at the same time. So if you have a computer with TV card inside and you are viewing TV then you do need a license.
Providing then television programme is not being transmitted at the same time as the programme you are watching on the internet, then you are safe.

No you do not need a TV license if you have a computer or a mobile phone. You do not even need a TV license to watch BBC iplayer.

Its all based on whether a programme is viewed from a live transmission or not. That is the basics of it all.
There is a lot of confusion about it all and yes they do need to be clearer.

Who remembers those adverts in the early ‘80s with the TV detector van with a massive satellite dish on the top that knew “exactly which houses didn’t have a TV licence”.
What a load of old rubbish, 30 years later they are still sending out threatening letters and using propaganda such as the BFP to scare people into paying.

You ever tried to give up the old box. I don't watch tv now (i.e don’t have a tv) but have had a license in the passed you can’t get rid of them. They can’t get it through there thick heads that people can give up tv especially with the rubbish that’s on now. Took me ages to convince them I do not have a tv. And every now again they still think I have one and pop round to try and catch me out.

Why should those who pay the TV licence have to subsidise the Benefir frauds, council tax dodgers and general "don't want to work" scroungers ?

The bigger issue is that the whole TV licence premise is archaic.
I get BBC America in the States (same lousy shows, mind you)with no licence fee.
Give it a couple of years and the licence will go away.

The license fee goes to the BBC because we watch their TV channels. Surely then, the TV license should be called a BBC license and you are only allowed to watch the BBC if you pay the license fee. This would then be similar to the way Sky TV operates and would be much fairer to the public.
In days gone by, you only had the 4 channels and the BBC charging for affording us the privilege of watching TV without commercial ads may have been less nonsensicle but in this day and age when many of the top programmes (especially sport) are no longer on the BBC, then we are just being fleeced by the BBC. The license fee really should be abolished and if the BBC really think their programmes are worth paying for, then the government should force them to introduce a subscription service. Being forced to pay for something you may or may not use is not right in the vast majority of people's book!

i just get really pi33ed off when people don't pay and i have to! what makes them so special?
maybe if everyone paid thats meant to it may actually go down in price.

The TV licence system needs an overhaul i.e. scrap it.
A student living in a house of multiple occupation needs a TV licence, as do all the other students in the house - they need a TV licence each.
A rich person living in a house with 5 television sets needs only one licence.
Where is the justice and fairness in that?

I would happily pay double if '[italic][bold]W[italic]Town[/italic] TV[/bold] [/italic] ' were included!
We'd be able to see it all LIVE - Bucks hedgehogs that can roll into a ball, Bucks squirrels that eat nuts & LIVE images of the empty blue Bucks skies over Wycombe showing vapour trails where a flyover took place a few hours earlier!
