5,000 expected at 'Peoples Festival'

REGGAE stars Scratch Perry and Finley Quaye are to headline at a music festival that could attract a crowd of 5,000 people to the Rye next month.

But the gig has been dismissed as a "mini-Glastonbury" by a heritage group who say it is not being held in an appropriate place.

The High Wycombe Society, originally set up as a preservation group for the Rye, say there are "major issues" over the proposed 'Peoples' Festival'.

Between eight and ten bands and artists are due to play at the gig on August 23, subject to it being given a license by Wycombe District Council.

Tony Fooks, vice chairman of the High Wycombe Society, said: "It's almost like a mini-Glastonbury. We see very major issues.

"We do not believe it would be the right place for such large numbers to have alcohol on the premises.

"Secondly, we are very concerned with the noise of the music. They must be retained within the recognised decibel level set by the Licensing authority.

"We are also concerned where all the numbers coming from are going to park and where they are going to stay."

Mr Fooks added: "We are not opposed to a pop concert, just not on this scale. It's beyond the capability of the infrastructure in place."

But organiser Marco Iorio said: "Festival is a scary word - people think of Glastonbury. All we are doing is a little event on the Rye. It's not a massive event, it's going to be a magical event. It's something for the town.

"We have to make sure everything's secure and people are safe. The only way it can work properly is to make sure everything is prepared properly.

"It's not about youngsters getting drunk and smashing the place up. I want kids to go down and enjoy the day."

Mr Iorio added special speakers that could target specific areas of the Rye would be used to keep noise levels down.

A decision on whether a license will be granted for the event will be made within the next week.

A couple of things;

1. BFP many thanks for the forewarning, I shall ensure that my family and I are no where near High Wycombe that weekend.

2. In the article you mention;
subject to it being given a license by Wycombe District Council.

Does this mean a licence has not yet been given? I saw people on the High St on Saturday flogging tickets...

The rye is the perfect place for a festival - disappointing it is only for 1 day, lets make it a weekend event and bring some much needed trade to local businesses.

Rather have the kids enjoying live music than going out in chavy designer nonsense and nicking red subaru estate cars that they then wrap round a lamp post in Slough.
Which of these two is most likely to get you and your mates into the organ bank?

Apart from the obvious noise and litter issues, the Rye could be a good spot. It is close to the town, close to police, fire and the hospital.

The only other place I can think of is Hughenden Park which is bigger.

The problem with an event this big is that while maybe only 5,000 tickets are issued, you can end up with thousands more turning up in the hope of getting tickets.

Elmo - I like your style, the BFP do not allow us to comment on the actual article, so you comment here...

I would like to add, its a shame the parents of the child you refer to did not think about the consequences of letting a young (inexperienced) driver drive one of the fastest (0 - 60) cars allowed on the road.

I am only glad he hit a lamppost, and not an innocent pedestrian...

You'll want the last paragraph of the story where it is strongly insinuated that the car was stolen.

Lets put Wycombe on the map and support an event to succeed!, Reggae, Rice and peas, and Hot pepper sauce! all sounds good, An intercultural event , joining the town! Are we a town of supporters or not! Yes there will be noise, and litter, but hey I went to Cressex School! so nothing new there! Give the town a chance! and enjoy the best of it!

This is a terrible idea, the rye is not suitable for this kind of event and will be unusable for weeks after, surely the council will not let this take place it will be a disaster

So they can allow a circus, fairs, motor shows and thousands of people running over a patch of grass but not a music festival? We need to stop these kill joys holding Wycombe back. Bring the music and fun on!
Posted by: MikeyPikey, High Wycombe on 9:38am Thu 24 Jul 08
Circus fairs and motor shows do not attract 5000+ drunken revellers.....
now dont get me wrong, i woudl geenrally be very excited and would be attending - especially with Finley Quaye headlining, Its good for business, good for wycombe, etc however i live about 1 minute from the rye and am very nervous about the whole thing. Stick it in Hughenden and i'd be all for it! The rye simply isnt a suitable place.

How dare the council even consider allowing an event like this to happen! Good grief, before we know it there will be fun being had within the town, and we can't have that.

Ban all entertainment now!

to all the people that are worried this is a big gig for the town but not for the country of england, its crazy to think this is glastonbury,,,,be nice but that wont happen , we dont have a big enough line up to create that. This is a great gig for the town and i believe that people will respect the neighbors , we start at mid day and finish at 11.00 pm, the rye is the perfect spot for the day, this is a magical event and the rye is a magical spot, easy to get to for all, a gig on your doorstep how great is that. We have to respect the opinions of the people that are worried and prove to them we can have our own mini glastonbury on the rye without causing any problems, lets all do our bit to make this a success and prove the doubters wrong. music is power ...power to the people,
love the doctor

This is really great stuff… A festival like this should be celebrated and encouraged. Bringing people together with good peaceful music is the best way to create a better environment, enhance community spirit and promote a peaceful way of life. This is going to be fantastic for High Wycombe and I hope the skeptics will learn to open up their eyes. For the rest of us, we know that bringing people together in a happy, forward thinking and well managed environment can only be a positive thing. It is amazing that the organizer of this event has had the guts and determination to realize this event and there is no doubt that The People of High Wycombe and surrounding areas should be in full support. This is The Peoples Festival after all and I would love to see it become a successful yearly event… putting High Wycombe firmly on the map as an enigmatic town with a passion for music and culture of all sorts.

i organise events for 50+ thousand people every year and my professional opinion is that this is gonna go horribly wrong and should not be permitted

Perhaps you could volunteer your expertise then and help make this a success.

I say 2 free tickets for all the residents of surrounding areas, that'll make me happier about it. Oh and Mr Doctor, can you please ensure ALL the broken glass is cleared up before i walk the dog on the rye at 8am the following morning, or you will be getting the vets bill. Its bad enough after a slightly warm wednesday eve with all the beer/alco pops bottles

hello to all , im sorry but didnt get a chance to check my emails yesterday so this is a day late, i have confirmation that the license has been granted so we are all good to go, i think it is funny that MORTY is so rude if im such an amateur it be great to meet up and discuss this or are you such a big promoter that your jealous that you never had the back bone to do this your self, i love the way they hide behind the computer, my email is marco@transplantmusi
c.co.uk if you want to mail me a contact number we can discuss your views. I bet MORTY dosent contact but i will keep you all informed on this 50,000 plus gig promoter, is it harvy goldsmith or micheal eavis that is pretending to be MORTY or is it a silly little man alone in his room drinking shandy and looking at pictures of trains.....Anyway today is a good day and the words of MORTY the train watching ,shandy drinking table tennis player from bognor regis wont spoil my day, so wanted to tell the good news to the people . Shame MORTY if you really do what you say you do it would have been nice to have a chat as it would have been good to rack your brains but i guess its easier to be rude .
The fella or lady that is worried about glass being on the rye need not worry as glass is not permitted on the site, no cans only paper cups all drinks will be served in these or plastic bottles, we have a clean up team booked for sunday to get the park back to its original state , so no need for vets bills . I think thats it for now, anymore news i will post it up,
thanks guys

...However, seeing as your so involved, Doc. can I ask a question.

Why on the same weekend as Reading Festival? Those of us who are most likely to attend this (and the after party) had already bought tickets to the monster festie, just up the road, several months ago.

To be honest, what with the Sunday riots, I would've preferred to come to this.

Doctor, any chance of getting the Brazilian dancers that opened Eden a few months ago? Unfortunately I was at work on the open day and missed it...

Also, at some festivals you see those women who are painted head to toe, wearing nothing else, I’m not an artist but would be willing to offer this service, I will even provide the brush and paint
